It was mainly collected by the botanist Eugène Vieillard (1819 - 1896) during exploration campaigns (1855 - 1860 and 1861 - 1867) "Employed as a marine doctor on a merchant ship from 1854 to 1857, E. Vieillard collected plants in Tahiti with Jean Armand Isidore Pancher. In 1861, he travelled to New Caledonia, calling at the Cape of Good Hope, Reunion Island, Sydney and New Zealand. From 1862 to 1867, he explored New Caledonia, where his work had taken him, and planted trees with the naturalist Émile Deplanche. He had a large plant collection: nearly 12,000 specimens, which he took back to France to distribute to European botanists". Wikipedia.
Most of the specimens are well preserved, despite their fragility.
