[CONDORCET (Jean-Antoine de Caritat, marquis de). Exposition des principes et des motifs du Plan présenté à la Convention Nationale par le Comité de Constitution. [Followed by:] Draft Declaration of the natural, civil and political rights of men. Achevé d'imprimer le 20 février 1793. 2 texts in one volume in-8, modern full marbled boards, red morocco title page. 65 pp., 47 pp. P. 65 trimmed short with loss of some characters, scattered foxing. Uncommon edition, without title page, of this draft Girondine constitution, of which there are several versions published in the same year. The text, signed by the members of the Constitution Committee (Condorcet, Gensonné, Barrère, Barbaroux, Paine, Pétion, Vergniaud and Sieyès) was almost entirely written by Condorcet, who was arrested shortly afterwards, in July 1793, for criticising the Jacobins' new draft constitution. "To give a territory of twenty-seven thousand square leagues, inhabited by twenty-five million individuals, a constitution which, founded solely on the principles of reason and justice, ensures citizens the fullest enjoyment of their rights ; To combine the parts of this constitution in such a way that the necessity of obedience to the laws, of the submission of individual wills to the general will, allows the sovereignty of the people, the equality between citizens and the exercise of natural liberty to subsist in all their extent, such was the problem we had to resolve.
