Description
BERAUD (Paul Emilien). History of the siege of Lyon. Or exact account of the events which took place in this city under the command of General Précy, and of the horrors which were committed there, by order of the Proconsuls Collot d'Herbois, Albitte and Fouché (of Nantes) and other villains. By an officer of the General Staff of the siege, who escaped the carnage and retired to Switzerland. Lausanne, s.n., 1795. One volume in-8, half-basecloth. 116 pp. the last unnumbered. Rubbing, foxing.
"At the time of the first revolutionary events, his majesty Louis appointed me judge at the tribunal de la campagne de Lyon. At the time of the King's trial, I was given a rather large package in Lyon containing M. de Sèze's plea and the King's last words to the infernal Assembly which assassinated him on 21 January. During the night I distributed the pleas and other writings in the districts, at the city gates and in all the squares. The municipal officers, first Bertrand, Chalier and others, unleashed all their henchmen at dawn; I escaped their pursuit. Since then, during the siege of Lyon, I have been a civil and military officer, my wife died on the way out; my son, wounded by my side, was taken prisoner with me on the same way out, commanded by Lieutenant-General de Précy. I escaped death by a miracle [escaped from his prison at the Hôtel-de-Ville, it is said, under the clothes of his mistress who came to visit him]. I emigrated to Switzerland [Neufchâtel], where I wrote a 4-part account of the siege of Lyon and a work that M. l'Avoyer de Berne had translated and printed in Basel, which earned me help and protection until my return to Lyon after the 9th Thermidor." Letter from Béraud to his nephew Francisque Bréghot du Lut in Michel Dürr, Dictionnaire historique des académiciens de Lyon.

[Anonymous] Récit sanglant de ce qui s'est passé à Lyon au sujet d'un Soldat suisse mis à la lanterne. Paris, Garnéry, s.d. In-8, soft half-chagrin. 8 pp. Rubbing.
"A soldier of the Swiss regiment of Sonneberg, who had been drinking with a private, got into a fairly heated quarrel with him: several people claimed that he had stabbed his adversary with a knife. He was arrested at the Porte Perrache and taken to the guardhouse. He was about to be taken to the Hôtel-de-Ville, but suddenly a mob, no doubt led by ill-intentioned people, snatched him out of the hands of the horsemen and hanged him between two lampposts. The people dragged his body through the streets, uttering horrible cries, for more than three hours...".
