Description
BONNAL (Commander). Equitation. Paris, L. Baudoin & Cie, 1890. One volume in-8, full contemporary basane. VIII, 267 pp. 8 pp. of publisher's catalogue. 8 hors-texte plates and 7 folded plates of photographic snapshots taken by Marey to study gaits. First edition of this very rare text studying the gaits of horses. It is accompanied by an important appendix, comprising 7 fold-out chronophotographic plates: these prints were taken in 1889, at the physiological station in the Bois de Boulogne, by the famous physiologist Étienne-Julies Marey (1830-1904), assisted by his trainer, Demeny (1850-1917); they represent three mares Franfeluche, Sylphide and Niniche, parading according to various gaits: pas normal, reculer, normal trot, disjointed trot, petit trop marché holding the hips, normal canter to the right, high jump from trot. According to Bonnal, these images were obtained on "sensitive paper, unrolling at a speed of 1 metre per second and giving 25 images at the same time" (p. 223). In reality, these were Marey's first films made on transparent celluloid, and not on "sensitive paper", as attested by one of the tapes held by the Cinémathèque française (Fanfreluche montée au pas normal, bande pour zootrope, ref. AP-18-3230). Starring: BRIGNAC (Capitaine de). Équitation pratique. Paris, Delagrave, 1905. One volume in-8 paperback. 157 pp. 75 figures and drawings in the text after Lehagre. Includes: L.L***. Notions élémentaires d'équitation pratique. Paris, L. Baudoin, 1893. In-8 pamphlet of 57 pp, (1) f. Traces of adhesive to endpapers, wear.
