Description
SAUNIER (Gaspard de). The true principles of cavalry. Amsterdam, Zacharie Chatelain, 1749. One volume in-12, full 19th century pastiche basane, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt fillet framing the boards. XXXVI, 210 pp. Frontispiece stained, paper slightly browned, slight soiling. Very rare first edition, with copper-engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. "The work, published after the author's death, is written in the form of questions and answers between the 'squire' and the 'disciple'. It contains notions of riding, dressage, hippology, etc., intermingled in no great order, and ends with a detailed account of the duties of the Ecuyer in peace and war. The expressions of extreme politeness used by the two interlocutors for each question or answer have the stamp of the period, but they lengthen the dialogue considerably." Mennessier de La Lance, II, 490. From the library of Paul Couturier de Royas with ex libris vignette.
