MONTFAUCON DE ROGLES (M de). Traité d'équitation. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1778. One volume in-4, full 19th century black chagrin. XVI, 198, V pp. Rubbing, wear to corners, scattered foxing. 9 folding plates engraved by La Gardette representing in particular developments of riding schools and equestrian figures. Posthumous first edition of this treatise, a rare written testimony to the doctrine of the Versailles riding school, whose teaching was essentially oral. The work had a lasting influence on French equestrian teaching, particularly on the principles adopted by the Saumur School in the early 19th century. Montfaucon de Rogles (1717-1760) was second squire at the Chevau-Légers riding school.
