Description
[Commission de louveterie] [Wolf hunting / François de France]. Commission issued by François de France, duke of Alençon, to François Malard, esquire, to hunt wolves and cubs in the duchy of Alençon and the county of Perche, with "force chiens, harnois, filletz à cor et autres engins", which wolves "often devour several human creatures, eat several oxen, cows, sheep...", done at Argentan on 16 June 1570: parchment 21x29 cm, right edge cut with gaps in text, autograph signature of François de France. Document under glass decorated in the upper part with 2 engravings of François de France, an analysis of the document and a token of 1573. Interesting document on the presence of anthropophagous wolves, which swarmed in France at the end of the 16th century. François de France (18 March 1555-10 June 1584) was the last son of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis. He was titled Duke of Alençon, Anjou, Touraine, Brabant and Château-Thierry, and was also known as François d'Alençon or François d'Anjou. He played an important political role in France in the 1570s, leading the Malcontent party. He caused unrest at the court of his brother Henry III and took part in the sixth and seventh Wars of Religion. He was promised to Queen Elizabeth I of England, but the marriage did not go ahead. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 29. His premature death had one major consequence: as King Henry III had no children, Henry of Navarre, leader of the Protestant party, became heir to the crown of France.
