Edouard Charton. The ‘Magasin pittoresque’, from the first year, 1833, to the 27th year, 1859, 28 quarto volumes, in contemporary red half-shagreen, decorated spines, uniform bindings, comprising 27 volumes and 1 volume of tables. An exceptional set in uniform bindings. This journal, founded by Edouard Charton in 1833, set the standard for its genre. This popular encyclopaedia, conceived as a jumble of texts and images, allowed everyone to access knowledge without it feeling burdensome, since, as *La Vie parisienne* noted in 1867, “this variety entertains without tiring, and this wealth of subjects means they are quickly forgotten, so that one finds the same pleasure in rereading them as in reading them for the first time”. As the descriptive epithet suggests, the publication, adorned with illustrations, had an appealing character. This marked a significant collaboration by Grandville, contributing both text and images, following his article on Goya. Also of note are the famous scores for *Musique animée* (8 woodcuts, 1840) and *La Métaphore de la Chrysalide* (text, 3 woodcuts, 1841).
