Description
Prosper Alpini. Rerum Aegyptorum Libri Quatuor. A posthumous work, now published for the first time. Lyon, Gerardum Potuliet, 1735, in-4, 9ff.-248pp.6ff., 25 plates of animals and plants, contemporary half-vellum binding, handwritten title on the spine A first edition, this posthumous work covers various subjects, including religion, botany and zoology; it is illustrated with 25 engraved plates, some of which are folded, depicting antiquities, plants, snakes, reptiles, crocodiles, camels, camelids, giraffes, monkeys and hippopotamuses. An Italian physician and botanist, Prosper Alpini (1553–1647) travelled to Egypt from 1580 onwards and remained there for three years. He is credited with several important works on medicine and botany in Egypt. (Nissen-20) Bookplate from the library of the botanist Théodore Chaboiseau (1828–1894). A fine copy.
