Description
Charles de L'Ecluse. Rariorum plantarum historia. The next page will list any additions. Antwerp, Ex officina Plantiniana. Published by Joannes Moretus, 1601, folio, comprising 6 leaves and 364 pages, CCCLVIII pages and 6 leaves, in a contemporary half-marbled calf binding, decorated spine, red morocco title label, speckled edges. Portrait engraved by Jacob de Ghein the Younger; the work is illustrated with 1,111 engravings. The woodcuts were engraved by Gérard Van Kampen and Arn. Nicolaï. A large number of new engravings were produced by Virgile Solis’s son in Frankfurt. One of the earliest works on fungi, it describes 76 species. Despite a few classification errors, Ch. de L’Ecluse’s book is one of the finest works on botany published at the time. The plants he describes for the first time number in the hundreds, and the accuracy of his descriptions far exceeds that of all his predecessors.
