The first two years of this important art journal, a symbol of the significance of the illustrated press during the Second Empire.

24 issues bound in a folio volume, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine, panels decorated with gilt fleurons, original covers preserved.
Numerous black-and-white illustrations.
Normal wear and tear, scattered foxing.
The first two years of this journal, to which Gustave Doré contributed extensively. The 24 issues contain nearly 100 of his illustrations.
Included is: the first issue dated 31 January 1855, featuring the beautiful front-page illustration of ‘La Guerre d’Orient’ by Gustave Doré, as it originally appeared (without the issue number added prior to the publication date).
Founded in 1855 by Charles Philipon (1800–1862), this periodical began as an illustrated supplement to the *Journal pour rire*, before later becoming *Le Musée français*. Each issue features 8 pages of views of monuments, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits and historical subjects.
