Description
[IVORY COAST – SUDAN] MONNIER, Marcel. The Binger Mission: Black France (Ivory Coast and Sudan). First edition of one of the earliest major accounts of the Ivory Coast and French Sudan. Paris, Plon, Nourrit et Cie, 1894. In-8, brown half-basane, ribbed spine with panels adorned with a gilt fleur-de-lis. XII and 298 pp., 40 photographic illustrations. Spine sun-faded, minor wear and tear from use. First edition illustrated with full-page photographs by the author. Marcel Monnier (1853–1918), a reporter and photographer for the newspaper *Le Temps*, accompanied the Binger mission in 1892, which was tasked with demarcating the border between French Ivory Coast and the British Gold Coast. Included is an autograph letter signed by Binger to a Councillor of State concerning his appointment to a commission (1½ pages, in-12 format, with his printed address). A fine copy.
