Description
[DUCHAMP] BRETON, André. Young Cherry Trees Secured Against Hares. Jeunes cerisiers garantis contre les lièvres. A Surrealist in New York: first bilingual edition, in French and English, featuring a dust jacket designed by Marcel Duchamp. A collection printed in a run of 1,000 copies. New York, London and Paris, View Editions, A. Zwemmer and La Jeune Parque, 1946. Large 8vo, white publisher’s cardboard binding with a portrait of the author on the front cover, colour illustrated dust jacket with a window revealing the portrait. Unpaginated (29 ff.), 2 out-of-text illustrations. Spine of the dust jacket browned, as is often the case. First bilingual edition of this collection by André Breton, then in exile in New York. It is adorned with a playful dust jacket in the Dada spirit, designed by Marcel Duchamp: Breton’s portrait illuminating the world. This edition also contains two black-and-white illustrations by Arshile Gorky (1904–1948), an Armenian painter who became a naturalised American citizen, translated into English by Edouard Roditi. Limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies on laid paper (no. 439). A fine copy.
