Description
[BIBLE]. The Holy Bible, Vulgate Edition, revised by order of Pope Sixtus V and published under the authority of Pope Clement VIII. Old Prague, Franciscus Hladky, 1756. In-8, full marbled brown sheepskin, straight ribbed spine, richly decorated panels with gilt metal, brown leather title label, cold-stamped fillet framing the covers, linings and endpapers of handmade red combed paper, red edges. 13 unnumbered folios, 894 pages and 24 unnumbered folios (index), engraved frontispiece (Klauber). In Latin. Spine creased with a few small wormholes along the joints, slight wear and tear from use, rare foxing, initial ‘H’ photocopied and pasted onto the back of the title page. A fine Prague print in two columns, with a border on every page. Engraved frontispiece by Klauber. Handwritten bookplate, scraped off and then replaced with ‘Kohler, on loan’, accompanied by a surprising autograph note in French: “There are 31,173 verses in the Bible; 773,692 words and 3,966,480 letters”… A fine copy in a contemporary binding.
