Description
[ITALY – SANTIS, Domenico de]. Genealogical Treatise on the Most Noble Colonna Family. Place and date of publication unknown [c. 1675]. In-4, soft vellum binding, plain spine with handwritten title. Unpaginated (approximately 90 pages). In Italian. Upper hinge open (back cover leaf torn off), spine tarnished, a few stains and small wormholes on the covers. A genealogical treatise on the House of Colonna, one of Rome’s oldest and most prestigious noble families. It produced a pope, Martin V, numerous cardinals, ‘condottieri’ and princes. Its influence was considerable from the Middle Ages through to the modern era. This study is attributed to Domenico de Santis, a 17th-century historian best known for his ‘Columnensium procerum imagines, et memorias nonnullas Hactenus in unum redactas’ (published in 1675 in Rome), a collection of portraits and memoirs concerning the Colonna family. This genealogy is often bound together with the work. The final pages, in Latin, contain a transcript of a ruling by an ecclesiastical court of the Roman Curia (3 June 1672) concerning the entail of the Colonna family, intended to safeguard its social and political heritage. An interesting historical document.
