Description
[EGYPT] PIERRET, Paul. The Book of the Dead of the Ancient Egyptians. A journey into the afterlife with the Egyptologist Paul Pierret, who translated the work. Paris, Ernest Leroux – ‘Bibliothèque orientale elzévirienne’ series, 1882. Large 12mo, brown half-percale Bradel binding with corner pieces, smooth spine adorned with a gilt fleur-de-lis, black sheepskin title label, covers preserved. IX and 661 pp. Some minor scuffing to the binding and two small white spots. First edition of the French translation based on the Turin Papyri and the Louvre manuscripts. It is the work of Paul Pierret (1836–1916), Egyptologist and curator of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the Louvre Museum. This collection of incantations and prayers, inscribed on sarcophagi, papyri and even papyrus strips, sheds fascinating light on the journey of the soul in ancient Egyptian thought. A copy in good condition, in a pleasant and modest binding of the period.
