Description
CLAUDEL, Paul. A signed autograph letter and postcard addressed to Abel Bonnard. A few words of congratulations regarding the Académie française and the appointment of his colleague. 1 page, in-8 format, on printed letterhead from the French Embassy in the United States (192 x 146 mm) and 1 page, in-12 format, affixed (90 x 140 mm) to the reverse of a photograph of the Château de Brangues. Washington, 17 June 1932, and Brangues, 24 June 1935. 17 June 1932: He congratulates Abel Bonnard on his election to the Académie Française to succeed Le Goffic. “When I was living in China, I had your two volumes of verse sent to me and read them with immense pleasure”… 24 June 1935: another note of congratulations, this time to commend Abel Bonnard’s speech at the reception for Marshal Franchet d’Espérey, who was taking up the seat vacated by Marshal Lyautey. In 1935, Paul Claudel (1868–1955) narrowly missed out on a seat on the Academy to Claude Farrère. He was elected eleven years later, in 1946, unopposed, at the age of almost eighty.
