Description
[IVORY COAST] VERDIER, Arthur. 35 Years of Struggle in the Colonies. West Africa. A rare account of the early days of French settlement and the development of the Ivory Coast in the late 19th century. Paris, Chailley, n.d. [1896] In-8, red glazed half-basame, spine with raised bands highlighted by a dotted gold fillet, panels adorned with a gold fleur-de-lis. XV and 360 pp., numerous photographic plates, one fold-out map. Arthur Verdier (1835–1898) was a merchant, French resident in Grand-Bassam and Assinie, and one of the key figures in maintaining French influence in Côte d’Ivoire. He developed trading posts, established the country’s first coffee plantation at Elima and supported the first exploratory expeditions into the interior. In good condition.
