Description
[PERFUME] RIMMEL, Eugène. The Book of Perfumes.
Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott and Co, 1867
IN-4, publisher’s cardboard binding, burgundy percaline Bradel binding, plain spine adorned with a richly decorated gilt title, gilded border decoration on the covers with, in the centre, a repetition of the title and the author’s name framing a coat of arms designed by the author and the motto ‘Non cuique datum est habere nasum’, gilt edges.
XX and 266 pp., frontispiece, 11 black-and-white plates and numerous figures in the text, typographical ornamentation on every page.
In English.
Spine restored, corners worn, frontispiece leaf slightly frayed, small tear on page 3, a few foxing spots.
American edition of this famous work, which traces the history of perfumes from antiquity to the 19th century, illustrated with over 250 vignettes by Bourdelin, Thomas, etc. Indicated as the 5th edition.
We owe this study, first published in London in 1965, to Eugène Rimmel (1821–1887), a Franco-British perfumer and businessman whose name has entered common parlance to denote mascara, the first industrially produced eyelash tint. At the end, there is an interesting appendix listing the main ingredients used in perfumery.
A fine copy in a publisher’s cardboard binding bearing the author’s coat of arms and the amusing motto: ‘Not everyone is blessed with a nose!’
