Description
[BRITTANY] RADIGUET, Max. L'École de Monsieur Toupinel (Scenes from Childhood). n.p. [Brest], n.p. [printed by Lefournier aîné], 1870. 12mo, black half-shagreen, ribbed spine. 117 pp. Black stain on the front cover; corners and edges very slightly scuffed. First edition of this autobiographical account in which the writer and traveller Max Radiguet (1816–1899) recounts his childhood memories at one of the very first mutual schools established in Brittany. Print run stated on the title page: 50 copies “offered for sale to benefit the wounded”. In the autumn of 1870, Brittany mobilised thousands of men to bolster the Franco-Prussian War initiated by Napoleon III. As a major military port, Brest became a hub for receiving soldiers, organising the logistics of local ambulances and setting up committees of the Société de secours aux blessés militaires (the forerunner of the French Red Cross). An excellent copy in a contemporary binding, enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author.
