Description
SMITH, Adam. The Theory of Moral Sentiments, or an Analytical Essay on the Principles of the Judgements which Men Naturally Form, First, Concerning the Actions of Others, and Second, Concerning Their Own Actions. Followed by a dissertation on the origin of languages. Paros, F. Buisson, 1798. 2 volumes in-8, each bound in brown half-calf, ribbed spine, covers edged with gilt fillets, gilt garlands at head and foot. VIII and 466 pp.; 2 unnumbered folios and 511 pp. Spines uniformly sun-faded, small stains and a wormhole at the top of the spine of the first volume, water damage to the first few leaves of the second volume. French first edition, in the translation by Sophie de Grouchy de Condorcet (1763–1822) based on the seventh and final edition. The second volume is supplemented by eight letters on sympathy written by the author to Cabanis, her brother-in-law. In this treatise on moral philosophy, Adam Smith demonstrates that the sentiments, empathy and judgement of an ‘impartial spectator’ form the foundations of moral conduct and social life. A good copy.
