Description
GILBERT & GEORGE. The Ten Commandments for Gilbert & George. Paris, Jannink, ‘L’Art en écrit’ series, 1995. Narrow 8vo, pink cover with flaps, publisher’s cardboard slipcase. Unpaginated (48 pages). First edition featuring a silkscreen print, numbered and signed by the artists. Limited edition of 314 numbered copies on Neige paper (no. 24). “From their very first end-of-year exhibition at St Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967, Gilbert (Prousch, born in 1943 in the Dolomites, Italy) and George (Passmore, born in 1942 in Devon, England) went against the artistic conventions of the time. Both subjects and objects of their art, the two artists have since regarded themselves as a single artistic entity and devoted their lives to their art, eliminating all superfluous concerns and immersing themselves in a discipline as rigorous as it is creative, whilst allowing themselves the greatest possible madness. From the early 1970s onwards, Gilbert & George created art on a grand, even colossal scale, depicting the present and future world. As veritable living sculptures, they have developed a repetitive language centred on recurring figures and motifs: shit, piss, blood, tears, nudity, semen, alcohol and drugs. A body of work that radically challenges the conventions and political correctness of the time, and which literally addresses homosexuality, exclusion, and social and religious violence.” (publisher’s website) In perfect condition, complete with the insert on a fuchsia-coloured sheet of the same size.
