Description
[REVOLUTION] PELTIER, M. History of the Revolution of 10 August 1792, the causes that led to it, the events that preceded it, and the crimes that followed it.
London, n.p., 1795
2 volumes in-8, each bound in marbled brown sheepskin, with smooth, richly decorated spines, title and volume number labels in red leather, guilloché-patterned edges and caps, red edges.
1 unpaginated leaf (preface), VIII, 1 unpaginated leaf (title page) and 424 pp.; 2 unnumbered folios and 539 pp.
Some normal wear and tear, slight scuffing to the binding of the first volume, occasional foxing and some water stains on the margins. Without the portraits of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII.
First edition under this title of this counter-revolutionary pamphlet by Jean-Gabriel Peltier (1760–1825), a royalist journalist forced into exile in England. He vigorously revisits the origins of the uprising, the overthrow of Louis XVI and the violence that characterised the Reign of Terror.
On the reverse of the title page of the second volume, a handwritten note in awkward handwriting: ‘Je vous desir [sic] Esther...’.
