A charming illustrated edition of this sensual and dreamlike tale by two leading figures of Symbolism.

In-8, aubergine shagreen, smooth spine, front cover adorned with a stamped fan and enhanced in colour, with the letter X in gold lettering at the centre; original covers preserved.
44 pp., half-title page, frontispiece, 4 plates, 4 headpieces, 4 tailpieces and initials; all enhanced in colour by Eugène Charpentier.
Three slight indentations on the second cover of the binding and a few minor scuffs; the margins of the cover are slightly browned.
Illustrated edition by Gustave Adolphe Mossa (1883–1971), a Symbolist painter. In this tale, Albert Samain (1858–1900) portrays Xanthis, the ideal of unattainable beauty.
Limited edition of 1,025 copies; this is number 775, printed on Arches vellum.
Ex-libris vignette by T. Froissard.
