[BIBLE]. The Holy Gospels, translated from the Vulgate by Abbé Dassange. One of the first works published by Léon Curmer, a masterpiece of Romantic illustrated bibliophilia. Paris, L. Curmer, 1836. 2 volumes in 1 in-4 volume, in a beige publisher’s cardboard binding onto which the spine and covers of the first volume—printed in blue and bistre—have been mounted. In a black half-basane slipcase with a contemporary gilt spine. XXXVII–263 and 440 pp., chromolithographed frontispiece, 12 steel engravings, 10 woodcuts (views of Palestine and the Holy Places) and 2 coloured maps on applied China paper. Browned cardboard binding, some foxing. First edition of one of Curmer’s earliest publications, translated by Abbé Pierre-Nérée Dassance. First print run of the illustrations by Tony Johannot, Adrien-Louis-Marie Cavelier, Jean Alfred Gérard-Séguin and Louis Henri Brévière. Text of the Gospels framed by a wood-engraved border.
