Description
[PARIS] PRIVAT D'ANGLEMONT, Alexandre and BELON, José. Paris Anecdote. First illustrated edition. One of 50 copies printed on Japanese paper, containing a second state. Paris, Rouquette, 1885. In-4, red half-maroquin, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved. 278 pp., engraved frontispiece portrait and 50 drawings reproduced in black. A small mark on the upper board of the binding; the cover is preserved but slightly soiled. First illustrated edition by José Belon (1861–1927). The frontispiece features a portrait of the author etched by R. de Los Rios. Preface and notes by Charles Monselet. One of 50 numbered copies on Japanese paper containing a second state of the vignettes with annotations. Vignette featuring a coat-of-arms ex-libris. A picturesque portrayal of working-class Paris, describing the small trades, the marginalised, the night owls and the little-known neighbourhoods of the capital prior to the Haussmannian renovations. A friend of Baudelaire, Alexandre Privat d’Anglemont (1815–1859) is regarded as one of the finest chroniclers of ‘bohemian’ Paris. A very fine copy, in a sturdy binding.
