Description
[CYPRUS]. Two 17th-century colour maps by Gerardus Mercator and Jodocus Hondius.
A combination of two maps of the island of Cyprus:
- A map by Gerard Mercator (1512–1594) showing the island of Cyprus and six Greek islands, c. 1608 or 1613, copperplate engraving (14 x 19 cm) hand-coloured on laid paper (17.5 x 22 cm), with text in French on the reverse corresponding to the descriptions of Chios, Lesbos and, in part, Euboea. The margins of the paper are slightly browned, but the map itself is undamaged.
- A map by Jodocus Hondius (1563–1612), probably from the *Atlas Minor* (c. 1618), engraved on copper (9.5 x 13.5 cm) and hand-coloured on laid paper (12.5 x 20.5 cm). Latin text on the reverse. The right-hand margin is frayed. Two ships between the cartouche and the southern coast of the island are being tossed about by the swell, accompanied by a small sea monster.
Two fairly sought-after maps, in good condition.
