Description
SAILLET, Alexandre de. *Children Painting Themselves*. First edition of the 32 lithographs, here enhanced with colour, in a binding by Engel. No place [Paris], no publisher [Desesserts], no date [1841]. In-8, blue half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head. Binding signed Engel. XV and 248 pp., 32 lithographs enhanced in colour, vignettes and initials carved from wood. Minimal scuffing to the binding; frontispiece, title page and table of contents missing. First print run of the 32 full-page lithographs of these ‘composition subjects’ provided by Alexandre de Saillet (1812–1866), a schoolmaster and educator, to his pupils. Each subject is accompanied by a description. [Carteret, *Le Trésor du bibliophile*, Romantic period 1801–1875, p. 221]. An excellent copy in which all the lithographs have been enhanced with colour using oil pastels. In fine condition.
