Description
REY, Maurice. A manuscript copy of his published works, including the collection *Escales* [1937]. A unique manuscript in which the poet has reproduced, word for word, his entire published body of work in a school exercise book. Attached is a letter to Auguste-Pierre Garnier, who launched the poet’s career. School notebook onto which the poet’s published works have been copied: over 200 handwritten pages in neat, typewritten-style script, including titles, dedications, print run details and ‘printed’ notes. In a Bradel binding of white vellum signed by René Aussourd, with a handwritten title on the plain spine and a triple black fillet framing the covers. Some marks on the white binding and slight indentation at the lower edge. An excellent manuscript in which Maurice Rey (?–1937) faithfully reproduces the published editions of his work: - *Escales* (146 numbered pages). Garnier Frères, 1935. - *Novembre*. Published by *Le Beau Navire* magazine, 1935 - *Variantes* for *Escales*. A new publication of the collection in 1936, initiated by friends of Maurice Rey. - *Musiques dans la nuit* (54 numbered pages) followed by “*Variantes*”. With this touching ‘printed’ note: ‘finalised by the author on 12 March 1937 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye’. Enclosed is a signed autograph letter from the poet addressed to Auguste-Pierre Garnier, then head of the Garnier publishing house and to whom the collection *Escales* is dedicated (3 pages in-8, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, “21 December”). Maurice Rey offers his best wishes and thanks him. “In the realm of letters, where all is nothing but treachery, calculation, jealousy and fickleness, my lucky star led me, one day in 1927, to this publishing house where all is nothing but integrity, selflessness, loyalty and affection, and it gives me great pleasure to recall here what I owe you.”
