A fine copy, first edition, featuring two autograph documents.

In-12, light brown half-basane, spine with four raised bands, covers and spine well preserved.
XII and 436 pp., numerous black-and-white illustrations.
Spine slightly sun-faded.
First edition. John Grand-Carteret (1850–1927), a journalist and historian, and a leading expert on caricature and iconography, took an early interest in the automobile and its history.
Two autograph documents signed by the author are included:
- an autograph letter signed to the publisher Baillière in which he announces his intention to publish a book on motor cars and requests, for his preparatory work, a volume on steam engines (1 page, in-12, on printed letterhead of *Le Figaro*, 16 June 1897, with envelope).
- a signed letter-card to a colleague, C.A. Laisant, regarding a meeting (1 page, in-12 format, Paris, 7 May 1913, with address and postmarks on the reverse).
