In 12, honey-coloured half-maroquin, ribbed spine, pine-green title label, with a full-length gilded monogram surmounted by a crown. XLV and 376 pp. Spine slightly discoloured with minimal scuffs, crease on the upper endpaper and the first leaf, small tear in the upper margin of page XXXIII, paper discoloured at the margins. First edition. Albert Bouinais (1851–1895), a French officer and orientalist, took part in negotiations with the Chinese authorities in 1887 and subsequently accompanied a delegation to Beijing. In this essay, he recounts his mission and his journey, and describes China from various perspectives: trade, the army and navy, religion, diplomacy and the country’s European policy.
