Description
[REVOLUTION] RIOUFFE, Honoré-Jean. Memoirs of a Prisoner: A Contribution to the History of Robespierre’s Tyranny. Second edition, partly in the original, of this first-hand account of the Reign of Terror. A fine copy on laid paper. Paris, Imprimerie d’Anjubault, Year III [1795]. Small 8vo, marbled brown calfskin, plain spine decorated with gilt friezes and lyres, red leather title label, gilt roulette framing the covers and gilt roulette on the inner edge, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges. 2 blank folios, XXIV and 228 pp. Joints rubbed with a slight tear at the foot and two small wormholes; lower cap missing; minimal scuffing to the front cover. Second edition, partly in the original state, of these memoirs published shortly after the fall of Robespierre. Honoré Jean Riouffe (1764–1813), a revolutionary close to the Girondins, was arrested on Tallien’s orders in October 1793 and detained at the Conciergerie. A fine copy, on laid paper, in a good contemporary binding.
