Description
[CYPRUS]. SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, Nicolas. Cyprus Insula.
Paris, Pierre Mariette, n.d. [c. 1658–1666].
Copperplate engraving (37.5 x 48.5 cm) hand-coloured on laid paper (43.5 x 60 cm).
Margins slightly frayed with two losses in the upper corners, without damage to the map itself.
This rare map, delicately highlighted in yellow along the coastline, is taken from the principal geographical work by Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville (1600–1667), *Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde* (General Maps of All Parts of the World), considered to be the first major French atlas. It is derived from the 1637 map by Jan Jansson (1588–1664, Dutch).
It is adorned with several ships, the coats of arms of the Ottoman Empire and the House of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus and Jerusalem, as well as a Cupid enthroned on the cartouche, surrounded by pairs of doves.
A fine map from the mid-17th century.
