Nicolas Schöffer (1912–1992), a visual artist and theorist of Hungarian origin, settled in Paris in 1936. From the 1950s onwards, his ‘luminodynamic’ installations – metal constructions with programmed movements and lighting – established him as a pioneer of kinetic and later cybernetic art, with numerous urban planning projects aimed at re-establishing humanity within a creative and liberating environment.
