[GAMES – SIENA] BARGAGLI, Girolamo. *Dialogo de' giuochi che nelle vegghie sanesi si usano di fare*. Games played in Siena in the 16th century, a rare Venetian edition. Venice, Giovanni Antonio Bertano, 1574. In-12, cream half-vellum Bradel binding with rounded corners, plain spine decorated at the top with the calligraphic title. 288 pp., engraved title vignette bearing the motto ‘Tutissima virtus; pietas hominis’. In Italian. Minimal soiling to the binding; upper margins of the leaves are short. A rare edition, published two years after the original, of this ‘dialogue on the games usually played at Sienese gatherings’. In this light-hearted, playful and somewhat folkloric treatise, Girolamo Bargagli (1537–1586), poet and playwright, describes some 130 recreational activities practised in Siena at the time, including palmistry and dice games. On the inside back cover, a label from the Italian bookshop G. Pedone Lauriel. In good condition.
