Paris, Henri Jonquières – ‘Les Beaux Romans’ collection, 1927. In-8, red coarse-grained half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine with four fine raised bands, gilt head, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved. 260 pp., 20 colour drypoint engravings, including the half-title page and the title vignette. Small stain at the bottom of pages 12 and 13. First illustrated edition of this novel about passions and social struggles in the French West Indies. It is illustrated with 20 fine colour drypoint engravings by Hermine David (1886–1970), a painter and engraver influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism Limited edition of 1,150 copies; this is one of 60 numbered copies printed on Dutch laid paper (no. 54). In excellent condition.
