A fine manuscript of these ‘institiones philosopphiae practicae’ or courses in logic. The handwriting, regular and meticulous, spans from November 1759 to March 1760, and the complete manual is divided as follows: - preliminary notions - prolegomena or preface (portrait of Plato, - pars prima logicae: on the idea and its perception - pars logicae secunda: on judgements - tertia pars logicae: on reasoning - quarta pars logicae: on method - appendix. An engraving of Saint Catherine, patron saint of philosophy students, opens the collection, which is peppered with portraits (Plato, Pyrrho, Socrates, Nicolas Malebranche, Aristotle, Descartes), an allegory of logic and philosophical representations such as Porphyry’s tree. Some of the engravings were printed by Hecquet, Montbard and ‘à l’Etoile’ on Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. On the first handwritten folio is the bookplate of ‘Stephanus de Rives’, which also appears on a manuscript on ethics held at the Sorbonne. In fine condition.
