A fine copy, enhanced by a dedication and two letters from the author, in a fine later binding signed by the bookbinder. Paris, À la Librairie illustrée, n.d. [1886]. In-12, ebony half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine with fine raised lines, speckled head, illustrated cover and spine preserved. Binding signed ‘Atelier Lardenchet’. XII and 272 pp., 45 black-and-white plates in and out of text, 5 maps. Cover preserved, slightly soiled, with a restored spine; rare scattered foxing. First separate edition of this fascinating study by Louis Figuier (1819–1894), a prolific populariser of science. Copy enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author Enclosed are two autograph, signed letters from Figuier concerning his work in progress (1 page, in-8, “Paris, 30 Nov.” addressed to his publisher, and 4 pages, in-8, “Paris, 18 June”). In fine condition.
