Description
[DIDEROT (Denis). Le Fils naturel, ou les épreuves de la vertu. Comedy in five acts, and in prose, with the true history of the play. Amsterdam, s. n., 1757.
In-8, 299 pp, marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, title-piece, gilt arms in the centre of the boards, gilt edges (period binding).
First edition. Defence of the play in the form of interviews pp. 137 to 299.
First performed in 1757 at the home of Louis de Noailles in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, this play helped to poison relations between Diderot and Rousseau. Rousseau wrote in his Confessions: "After the publication of Fils naturel, [Diderot] had sent me a copy, which I had read with the interest and attention one gives to the works of a friend. When I read the sort of poetic dialogue that he appended to it, I was surprised, and even a little annoyed, to find in it, among a number of disparaging but tolerable remarks against solitaries, this bitter and harsh sentence, without any softening: Il n'y a que le méchant qui soit seul [Only the wicked are alone].
Binding with arms very worn (leather missing) otherwise a good copy (Tchémerzine, IV, 447).
