12 vol. large in-8, purplish morocco, ribbed spines richly decorated with gilt and cold motifs with gilt arms in the centre of each of the last panels of the spine, wide gilt and cold border framing the covers with large cold medallion in their centre, gilt roulette on the edges, wide gilt inner border, gilt edges (period binding).
Spines faded to tan.
First collective edition, partly original. It is illustrated with a portrait of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre by Girodet and 27 hors-texte plates (including 1 folding map and some botanical plates) engraved by Dupont, Sixdeniers, Toschi, Roger, Danbrum, Delignon, de Longueil after Desenne, Lafitte, Moreau le Jeune, Prudhon, Vernet and Isabey.
A precious copy bearing the coat of arms of Pierre de MONTESQUIOU-FEZENSAC, Count of the Empire (1764-1834), French soldier and politician, Grand Chamberlain to Napoleon I and President of the Legislature. Some scattered brown spots.
