Description
STAËL (Germaine Necker, baronne de). Complete works published by her son; preceded by a note on the character and writings of Mme de Staël, by Madame Necker de Saussure. Paris, Treuttel & Würtz, 1820-1821.
17 vol. in-8, cherry glazed calf, richly decorated ribbed spines, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with floral motifs in the spandrels and a large cold-stamped plate in the centre, gilt roulette on the edges, double gilt fillet inside, gilt edges (period binding signed by Doll). Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait.
The work contains: Notices sur le caractère et les écrits Mme de Staël - Lettres sur J. J. Rousseau (1 vol.), Morceaux divers (1 vol.), de l'influence des passions sur le bonheur des individus et des nations (1 vol.), De la littérature (1 vol.), Delphine (3 vol.), Corinne ou l'Italie (2 vol.), De l'Allemagne (2 vol.), considérations sur les principaux événemens de la révolution françoise (3 vol.), Dix années d'exil (1 vol.), Essais dramatiques (1 vol.), Mélanges (1 vol.).
First edition of the complete works, partly original, edited by Baron Auguste-Louis de Staêl-Holstein (1790-1827) and Duc Achille-Charles-Léonce-Victor de Broglie (1785-1870), one the eldest son and the other the son-in-law of Mme de Staël.
This collection is well composed, carefully printed and presents, from a literary point of view, the best text of the definitive version of each of Mme de Staël's authentic works.
A precious copy presented here in fine contemporary glazed calf bindings signed by Doll. This Parisian bookbinder, active between 1796 and 1835, worked for Napoleon 1st and Queen Marie-Amélie. Some light foxing in places.
