Description
DURAND-BRAGER (Jean Baptiste Henri). Sainte-Hélène. Transfer of the Emperor Napoleon's coffin aboard the frigate Belle-Poule. History and picturesque views of all the sites on the island connected with the St Helena Memorial and the expedition of H.R.H. the Prince of Joinville. By M. Henri Durand-Brager, marine painter, embarked on the Brick l'Oreste, part of H.R.H.'s division at St Helena, dedicated to M. le Baron Gourgaud. Paris, Gide, 1844.
Broadside, half red morocco with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, double gilt fillet on covers.
The illustration consists of 29 lithographs (the table of plates gives 30, but a note indicates that plate 17 has been removed because it was merely a repetition of plate 16), including 5 portraits by Léveillé and Staal, and 24 views by Durand-Brager (1814-1879), a marine painter attached to the staff of the Prince of Joinville.
Durand-Brager travelled extensively in Europe, Algeria and along the Atlantic coast of Africa before joining Eugène Isabey's studio. In 1840, he was attached to the staff of the Prince of Joinville in the expedition to bring back Napoleon's ashes and boarded the ship Belle Poule.
A very fine copy, with a few pale brown spots.
