3 vol. in-folio, red morocco, richly decorated ribbed spines, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with gilt arms in the centre, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, gilt edges (period binding).
Second edition of this highly esteemed work. It is richly illustrated with a frontispiece, 2 portraits including 1 equestrian portrait of Louis XIII, 135 in-text mid-page portraits of the Kings as well as 87 medal figures, 70 of which are full-page; all engraved on copper.
Each chapter devoted to a king, queen or dauphin is preceded by a full-page engraving in the text with the portrait in a medallion and a eulogy; it contains several plates of medals with obverse and reverse (Brunet III, 1694).
A precious copy in contemporary morocco with the large arms of René-François de La Vieuville (1652 - 1719), marquis then duke of La Vieuville, colonel of the Navarre regiment and governor of Poitou. Some minor old wear or restoration, some minor internal defects including a small worm gallery in the white margin at the end of volume 1.
