The most complete edition of this esteemed work, the first French translation, by J. B. Le Mascrier, Charles Le Beau & l'abbé Des Fontaines (Brunet V 841.)
A fine copy bearing the arms, at the tail of the spines, of Henri de RIOLLET, Comte de MORTEUIL (1704 - 1793) who belonged to an old family established in Burgundy since the 15th century. A page in the Grande Ecurie at Versailles between 1714 and 1724, he was squire to Louis XV in 1747, then cornette in the Gramont Regiment and captain in the Limousin Regiment. In 1778, he took part in a year-long military mission to Austria and Russia. Some minor old wear and restoration.
