Description
MORIN (Pierre). Remarks necessary for the cultivation of flowers. With a catalogue of rare plants now in his garden. Rouen, Clément Malassis, 1665.
Small in-12 with [1] engraved frontispiece, [12]-192 pp. Post ivory vellum. Slight light spotting. Very fine marginal wormholes in places.
Rare Rouen edition (after the Paris original of 1658) of this work intended for lovers of "pleasure gardens" and the most famous florist of his time, who received collectors, friends and "flower enthusiasts" from all over Europe in his garden on rue de Thorigny in the Marais, including Cardinal Barberini, Marolles and Sauval, who wrote about their visits. "His tulips, anemones, ranunculus and crocus are among the rarest and attract all flower lovers to him. He became one of the most curious men in France thanks to his collection of shells, flowers and insects..." noted Evelyn in 1644. He had "miniature portraits made of his rarest flowers and plants".
The treatise (consisting of a Calendar of things to be done in the Flower Garden according to each Month of the Year, several chapters on the properties of each plant, such as those that fear frost or cold, those that like oily soil, a Memoir of the Seasons in which each beautiful Plant is in flower, a Catalogue of Flowers with the best smells, etc.) is followed by four catalogues "of the most beautiful plants in the world".) is followed by four catalogues "of plants that are currently in Morin's garden" and that could be ordered by mail order: pluche anemones, Tripoli ranunculus, tulips and irises.
