Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659) was bishop of Puebla and viceroy of New Spain in 1642. A defender of the Indians against Spanish abuses, he opposed the Jesuits, whom he had temporarily banned. A great patron of the arts, he developed education and music in Puebla, founding the Palafoxiana Library. After political conflicts, he was transferred to Osma in Spain. Beatified in 2011, he left a significant body of written work.
