A French hydrographic engineer, Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré (1766-1854) was a pioneer of modern marine cartography. He led around twenty campaigns at sea to establish a new survey of the western and northern coasts of France from Bayonne to Dunkirk. The result of this work was the 6 volumes of the Pilote français, which became a reference for navigation.
