Description
[LEFEBVRE-DURUFLÉ (Noël-Jacques). Excursion to the coasts and ports of Normandy. Paris, J. F. Ostervald (imp. Jules Didot ainé), [1823-1825].
Large folio (61 x 44 cm), half black long-grained morocco with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title and gilt stamps, unrogned (period binding).
First edition, illustrated with 40 plates after Luttringshausen, Bonington, Ronmy, etc. finely engraved in aquatint by Thalès Fielding, Reeve, Salathé etc.
Views of Rouen (6), Caudebec (1), Quilleboeuf (2), Harfleur (2), Honfleur (4 of which 2 on tinted background), Le Havre (10 of which 1 on tinted background), Étretat (3), Fécamp (3), Saint-Valery-en-Caux (1), Pourville (1), Dieppe (5) and Le Tréport (2). Dry stamp on some plates, each accompanied by an explanatory text.
Before the publisher confined himself to Normandy, the first three sections appeared under the title Voyage pittoresque dans les ports et sur les côtes de France, tome premier, Paris, de l'imprimerie et de la fonderie de Jules Didot ainé, 1823. This title page, preserved here, is followed by the title mentioned above; our copy is complete. Ex-libris JM on the upper flyleaf.
Some wear to the binding (spotting to the second board), foxing rarely affecting the engravings, otherwise a fine copy on large paper (Brunet, II, 1130-1131; Frère, II, 190).
