DEVILLE (Achille). Tombs of Rouen Cathedral. Second edition. Rouen, Nicétas Periaux, 1837.
In-8, brown half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, title page in green marble, gilt head, covers preserved. Later binding with the small gilt coat of arms, at the bottom of the cover, of Pierre de Séré (1868-1941), with his bookplate engraved by Eugène Courboin (with the motto "Vincit Veritas"). Ex-libris JM.
Second edition, more complete than the first of 1833. It is decorated with 12 plates engraved out of text, including a plan of the cathedral in the frontispiece, and enriched here with 3 additional plates.
"Of the many tombs that once adorned Rouen cathedral, only seven have survived: those of our first duke Rollon, of Guill Longue-Epée, his son, of Richard the Lionheart, of Maurice, archbishop of Rouen under S. Louis, of Pierre de Brézier, of the Archbishop of Rouen under S. Louis, of the Archbishop of Rouen under S. Louis, of the Archbishop of Rouen under S. Louis and of the Archbishop of Rouen under S. Louis. Louis, Pierre de Brézé, Grand Seneschal of Normandy, Georges d'Amboise and Louis de Brézé, husband of Diane de Poitiers. The others disappeared in the disasters of the Wars of Religion".
