Description
[ESNEVAL (M. d'). In memory of Sir Claude Le Roux, knight, baron of Acquigny, lord of Cambremont and Mesnil Jourdain, lord of Becdal, Vironvé, La Métairie and other places, king's counsellor in his Parliament of Rouen. In-4, tan basane, spine ribbed and decorated (contemporary binding). Covers worn. One engraved plate with arms, one folding table and one large folding genealogical table. Ex-libris JM. "One of these paintings represents the tomb inscription of Claude Le Roux, and the other the 32 quart. de nobl. of the chev. d'Esneval [...] At the head of the vol. is an engraving of the tomb erected to Claude Le Roux by Robert Le Houx d'Esneval, his son, vidame de Norm. ambassador to Portugal, in 1689. It is in this work, p. 7, that we find the following information which reveals the time of construction of one of the most interesting monuments in the city of Rouen: "It was he (Guillaume Le Roux II, around 1486) who began the magnificent palace which we still see today in one of the squares of the city (called the Marché-aux-Veaux), a monument to his greatness and opulence. It was later named the Hôtel du Bourgtheroulde. It is very well designed and in very good taste, although its architecture is commonly referred to as Gothic. The house's coat of arms can be seen on the door and in various other places. Around 1507, François I honoured Guillaume Le Roux III, abbot of Aumale and Val-Richer, by employing him in the negotiation of the famous Concordat treaty, and he completed the magnificent Bourgtheroulde mansion that his father had begun. Esneval (Robert Le Roux, vidame d'), diplomat, was entrusted by Louis XIV with several important missions in Portugal and Poland. Born in Rouen in 1609, he died on 15 February 1693, while attending the Diet of Grodnaw. The estate of the d'Esneval family is located in Pavilly, near Rouen". Frère I, 434. Barbier (I, 5) attributes the work to M. Bulteau de Préville (brother of the parish priest of Saint Laurent de Rouen).
